Meal Planning Benefits

Is meal planning useful? Does it add beneficial habits to our lives? We hear about it everywhere we turn, so let’s unpack some benefits of meal planning to see if it’s right for you or not.

Meal planning offers numerous benefits that can make your life easier, healthier, and more efficient:

Money Savings: It’s no secret that food prices have significantly increased over the past few years. I believe we could all use tips to save some money, so here are a few for you to consider.

Make a plan for the week ahead. Be sure to check your schedule and take into consideration if you already have plans to eat out for lunch or meet a friend for dinner. We don’t need to plan for food for those times. Create a plan for every meal you are preparing at home for the week. Next, write a list of all of the grocery items you will need for each of those meals.

Stick to buying only the items you need. Look through your pantry and fridge to see what items you already have on hand. There’s no need to re-buy ingredients you already have. It’s easy to buy random items when you shop without a plan. Shopping without a plan can lead to wasted food (wasted money) and overspending (buying items you don’t need), which also throws your budget off.

Having a plan and a list can help you shop more efficiently as well. If you shop in-store frequently and know the “map of the store”, write your list in order of the layout starting from the back of the store and working your way to the front. For example, I would write my list and group similar items together such as: eggs and dairy, deli and meats, cleaning supplies, canned goods, frozen items, bakery, fruits and vegetables. This saves you time from wandering from section to section searching for items and wasting your time.

I would also like to suggest that you shop using your favorite grocery app. You can order ahead for pick up at the store or have it delivered to your front door. For example, using WalMart+ is super convenient for either of these options. I find that not actually going into the store to shop and only adding the necessities to my order saves me money every time.

Time Savings: Planning meals in advance saves time throughout the week. You can consolidate shopping trips and cooking sessions, reducing daily kitchen time.

Having a plan of the items you need can lessen the number of trips you make to the store to get the one or two ingredients you forgot to pick up yesterday, ugh!

Take some time to prep ingredients in advance. This will help tremendously with the little quick meals as well as when you’re tired and just want to eat. You know, those times you’re tired and hungry, and the last thing you want to do is stand there chopping onions, carrots, and such. Having them pre-cut will help save time and create efficiency for cooking during busy days.

Reduces Stress: Not having to decide what to cook daily eliminates the stress of last-minute meal decisions. It also helps to alleviate the worry of not having ingredients on hand.

Batch cooking and preparing multiple meals at once during meal planning can save time during busy weekdays. You can cook in larger quantities and reheat or repurpose leftovers. This will help you save time in the decision process of what to eat as well and not having to cook the meals each day of the week, you already have them ready to eat – YAY!

Portion Control & Healthier Choices:  Planning meals allows you to be more mindful of what you’re eating and you tend to make more nutritious choices. This mindfulness can lead to a better appreciation of food, improved satisfaction after meals, and reduced mindless snacking. It helps you to balance your diet by including a variety of nutrients and controlling portion sizes.

You can prepare meals according to your dietary goals. You also have better control over the nutritional content and portion sizes, which can aid in weight management, reaching specific health goals, and helping prevent overeating.

Having a meal plan encourages consistency in eating habits. Regular mealtimes and a routine can positively impact digestion and overall well-being. Consistently eating balanced meals planned in advance can stabilize blood sugar levels, providing more sustained energy throughout the day.

Improve Organization & Reduce Food Waste: Meal planning promotes a more organized kitchen with a clear inventory of what ingredients you have and need, leading to a more efficient cooking process. Planning meals based on what you already have and what needs to be used up helps minimize food waste. You’re less likely to buy items you won’t use or forget about ingredients that might spoil.

Helps Accommodate Dietary Restrictions: If you or your family members have dietary restrictions or preferences, meal planning allows you to tailor meals accordingly.

In our house, we have gluten, dairy, and nut restrictions. Batch cooking or meal prepping can make life so much easier when it comes to lunches in particular. Whether you work out of the home or from home, lunch generally needs to be one of the meals that is ready to go with little to no prep work involved. It also helps to minimize cross-contamination of other food as it is contained in your designated container.

If you’re transitioning to a new diet or lifestyle, meal planning can make the process smoother by gradually introducing new foods and recipes. Changing the foods your eat often involves trying new recipes or cooking methods. It’s an opportunity to expand your culinary skills and experiment with different cuisines ensuring that your meals are interesting and diverse.

Allows for Special Occasions: Planning ahead for special events or occasions lets you prepare celebratory meals without the stress of last-minute arrangements or excessive spending.
